I am always looking for new ways to kill spam. This is a unique solution that creates an endless loop of fake e-mail addresses that the spambot gets trapped in!

Here is what their website writes:

Email harvesting bots, otherwise known as data miners, follow links, grabbing email addresses out of each page it visits. When one of these bots comes to your site, all sites you’ve linked get crawled for email addresses.

This site renders these harvester’s lists useless by filling them with invalid e-mail addresses. Once a spammer hits this site, they enter an infinite loop of randomly created email addresses (starting with the ones it generates when it first comes to the site) Once a mailing list has been poisoned with a number of invalid e-mail addresses, the resources required to send a message to this list increases, even though the number of valid recipients has not. This forces the spammer to exhaust more resources to send e-mail, in theory costing the spammer money and time. A best-case scenario would cause the spammer to throw out the mailing lists completely.

If you link to this page, whenever a harvester visits your site, it gets filled up with superfluous email addresses. These email addresses change every time this page is visited.

If you want to add this same feature to your blog or website, simple copy and paste this code onto your site:

P.S. They also have a snail mail version as well!

According to the Edmonton Sun, famed theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking has been taken to the hospital and is quite ill.

Hawking has been credited with bringing theoretical physics to the masses.  His books A Brief History of Time (a personal favorite) and The Universe in a Nutshell, allowed the average reader significant insight into a world which, previously, had only been available to the academic elite.  One of his passions is to reach the regular person with his work and he has made several different appearances on popular television shows to help promote it.  Here are a couple of examples:

Star Trek TNG

Simpsons

All of our best goes out to you, Stephen.

I woke up this morning to the news that Oracle has agreed to purchase Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion.  My first reaction was, “Why would a software company want to purchase a company that is primarily hardware based?”

There are a number of possible answers to this question.

  • They may want to diversify their product lines in a difficult financial time.
  • They may want to secure the Java software which is key to many of their applications and even their client.
  • They may want to get their hands on Glassfish, an open source server development product by Sun.

I would like to put forth my own theory.  I believe that it is possible that Oracle has purchased Sun to get control of a major competitor to their database platform: MySQL!

Database Platform Used

MySQL is the defacto standard for a number of applications, most notably many content management systems on the Internet.  For example, Wordpress runs with MySQL on the back end.  According to Sun, MySQL has 25% of market share in overall database usage by developers.  If Oracle were to get control of MySQL, there are a number of scenarios that could follow:

  • They could quit providing commercial support for MySQL
  • They could quit development of MySQL
  • They could force MySQL customers to Oracle
  • They could incorporate MySQL into Oracle and release their own open source version
  • They could carve MySQL off and sell it to another company

To be honest, I’m not certain that Oracle will do with it.  I do not think that there is anything to panic about at this time but I do think that this will be a situation that we need to monitor.

Microsoft ends mainstream XP, Office 2003 support

Microsoft retired mainstream support for Windows XP and Office 2003 today - but that doesn’t necessarily mean anyone should be in a hurry to upgrade to Vista yet.

The firm will continue to offer extended support packages on both products through to 8 April 2014, allowing businesses and individuals plenty of time to consider their options before plumping for a new operating system.

From today Redmond will charge XP and Office 2003 customers who need assistance on a per-incident, per hour, or alternative basis. The changes apply to all editions of the Office suite as well as all versions of XP with the exception of Embedded.

Non-security critical fixes will be available to those punters who signed up to Microsoft’s Extended Hotfix Support program 90 days before mainstream support was killed off.

Security updates will be pumped out free of charge for Office 2003 and XP until 4 August 2014.

Microsoft released Service Pack 3 for XP in April last year, while the third service pack for Office 2003 landed in September 2007.

Any customers that bought a computer with the eight-year old XP pre-loaded onto the system will need to contact their OEM for support.

Microsoft also sounded the death knell for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 support today. In effect, the company wants users to upgrade to SP2 of the product.
