Thanks for visiting Daily Cup of Tech!
Here are a few things that you may want to do while you are visiting:

Hope you enjoy your stay!

Tech Blog of the WeekWhen I first started to think about blogging, I actually almost decided against it. I saw so many really good tech blogs out there that I was not really certain that I had anything more to contribute. But, I decided to take a chance and the blogging community has really welcomed me with open arms.

Now that I have been doing this for a while, I thought that I should start shining the spotlight on some other worthy tech blogs out there. Unfortunately, this task is far too large for me to do an my own. So, I am asking you, the DCoT readers, for some help.

I would like you to nominate your favorite tech blog (it can also be your own) for the Daily Cup of Tech Tech Blog of the Week. Each week, I will select a different blog to highlight. They will receive their own award graphic that they can place on their website along with a link to the wonderful things said about them. They will also be added to the DCoT blogroll and custom search engine.

To submit a blog for this honor, you simply need to go to the submission page and enter it in the (very short) form. But, please before you submit that blog!

I am looking forward to seeing some of the excellent blogs that are out there.

After the feedback from the Today’s Tech News Poll, I was a bit unsure as to what to do.  It seemed like the majority of people didn’t care what I did with the news posts while the rest were evenly split between liking and not liking it.

So, here is what I have come up with.  I will no longer be putting the tech news in the posts.  Instead, I have a link to Today’s Tech News on Google in the blogroll.  This way, the RSS feed does not get clogged with the news and those of you who want the news can still get it.

I may still highlight some exceptionally noteworthy piece of news from time to time but there will no longer be a regular daily news post.

I hope this works for everyone.

ZThis was passed on to me from a newly acquired friend in the blog world. I started checking the sites listed and it works!

What’s the idea? It started with Mack Collier of The Viral Garden, who came up with the idea of giving a links boost to us smaller bloggers, the ‘Z List’. As you may know, a blog’s success in terms of visibility really depends on links: more links = higher Technorati & Google Pagerank results = more people finding you.

Instructions

The premise is simple: Write a post, and copy and paste my list from below into it. Make sure the links are active and correct. If your blog is on that list, remove it because your post isn’t about self-promotion. Don’t worry, because if your name is on mine, it’s on others and will spread. Add your favorite deserving blogs to the top of the list (not compulsory). Publish the post. People will notice the incoming links, and hopefully write their own z-list posts. The result will be that we all get more links pointing to our blogs, and more readers — it’s got to be good!

Key Points

  1. Create a new post on your blog.
  2. Copy and Paste the entire list of blog links below
  3. Add any blogs that you want to include near the top of the list. (Optional)
  4. Include the blog where you first got the list from, on the list in your post.
  5. Do not include your own blog links on the list in your post.
  6. Make sure that all links are copied intact (use the source, Luke).
  7. Publish the Post.

JetI ran across a new security blog today called Security Buddha that promises to be an excellent resource. Mark Curphey has a long history in the computer industry, specifically in the security field.

A bit about Mark from his website:

I ran Foundstone consulting from 2003 until late 2006 during which time the company was sold to McAfee. Before joining Foundstone I was the Director of Information Security at Charles Schwab (responsible for the software security program) and have also worked for ISS and several financial services companies in Europe. I have a Masters degree in information security from Royal Holloway, University of London and was the original founder of the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP).

This is a blog to follow. Even though Mark’s blog has only been up for a day or two, there are already some interesting posts. Keep your eyes on this one!

I ran across a great spyware removal sight today. 411 Spyware Remove enables you to get rid of those pesky bits of spyware that are clogging up your system. They have a search engine, a removal tool, and instructions on how to remove hundreds of different types of spyware!

There are times that I think spyware may be worse than some of the viruses that are out there! Maybe I’m just paranoid about my information being out there but I will do whatever it takes to protect my computer system from these little devils. I’m definitely going to be using this site a lot.

Also, I’ve added them to the blogroll and blogroll search so you can use the blogroll search to find and destroy your (least) favorite spyware.

When you start a blog or a website, you never know what type of an effect you are going to have out there. In general, I thought that I would maybe help the occasional person or two but I did not have any expectations beyond that. Apparently, I was wrong.

ScriptingLife is the latest addition to the DCoT blogroll and he even credits DCoT with introducing him to AutoIt scripting! And, like any good tech person, Dan saw the short comings of what I had presented on DCoT and took it upon himself to improve it and make it available to his readers! I’m so proud! ;)

Anyway, good work, Dan and I look forward to following your scripting adventures.

Are those of you running the new Internet Explorer 7 as annoyed as I am with the location of the menu bar? Apparently the gang at [Geeks Are Sexy] were even more annoyed because they put together a great tutorial on how to get it back to where it belongs.

Be warned, there be registry hacking ahead!

In an excellent example of how the Internet community is supposed to work, I got an invitation for a GMail account from Steve at Steve’s BPCA Blog. After reading in my article that I did not have a GMail account, Steve decided to help me out by giving me an initiation. I am not now the proud owner of a brand new GMail address!

Also, Steve added me to his blogroll so I’ve returned the favor. I’ve also added him to the blogroll search!

Thanks for everything Steve and welcome to DCoT!

The latest addition to the DCoT blogroll family is Nothing but Unix. From their website:

Nothing but Unix news. All related to Unices such as Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Sun Solaris, Minix, AIX, HP-UX, Digital UNIX, SCO Unix, DragonFly BSD, Gnu/Hurd and others. One resource containing basic articles, stories and links of the day. For people which have some free time to be well informed about the basic events and news in this area.

I’ve spent some time digging around their site and it looks like they have some good information to offer. Welcome to the blogroll and search engine!
