Favorite Firefox Search Engines
One of the most important aspects of my online life is to be able to find what I need in a moment’s notice. The search field found in the upper right hand corner (by default) in Firefox is one of my favorite features. The wonderful thing about it is that you can expand your search options by adding other search engines.
Here is a list of my favorite Firefox search engines, in no particular order. Some come with Firefox while others I needed to download:
- Google - general searching
- Amazon - to find the next great book I plan to read
- Answers.com - general information
- Creative Commons - very useful when looking for blogging resources
- Wikipedia - general knowledge
- Merriam-Webster Dictionary - definitions and spelling
- Stock.XCHNG - awesome free stock photos
- IMDb - checking on the latest movies
- Mininova - finding my (legal) torrents
- YouTube - useful video
- LinkedIn - keeping in touch with my friends and colleagues from around the world
- eBay - when I need to find that hard to find item
- Flickr - nice photos
- Lifehacker -general tips and tricks
- Sourceforge - great opensource software
- Freshmeat Projects - great opensource software
There are tons of other search engines available on the Firefox add-ons website and the Mycroft Project website.
What are your favorite Firefox search engines? Point us in the right direction in the comments.

January 31st, 2008 at 1:49 pmI use ‘alltheweb.com’ … Noting the number of ‘google cookies’ that your site uses… I don’t use google. Don’t use Answers. I have avoided most of the ‘best’ search engines you recommend. Don’t get the answers I want, until I dig through all the cr*p they ‘want me to think are matches to my searches. I used to use ‘Web Ferret,’ years ago, until it started using the ‘feed search answers.’ These are the answers that sponsors pay to have fed first. With ‘Ask Jeeves’ it was so bad, nothing would come close to my desired ‘hit.’ I found, years between Web Ferret and now, that ‘AllTheWeb.com’ gave me the answers I wanted, sooner and with much better accuracy, than anything all of your ‘favorites’ could. I have had major reservations about where my favorite was going, once Yahoo! bought it out. I do find the ’sponsor feeds’ listed first. But, they are isolated from the ‘more or less’ real hits. I still have to do much less ‘tweaking’ with ‘alltheweb.com’ to get my real answer. With all the others, I used to have to do so much ‘tweaking’ that I could find answers by checking the web, one site at a time, much faster. (I used to have one of the larger ‘favorite’ folders imaginable. Between that and the links on Drudge, you could find most anything, in a month or so… which for esoteric searches I never had to do. Longest Search I ever had was 2 days… Found it with alltheweb.com. The others are probably getting better. But to find something with the security risks of some of the site, or the deluge of cookies with all the rest… Nah… If All the Web goes the way of the others, I still have my links.
