Archive Documents with Chicago Screws
As my wife and I are in the process of packing, we have discovered that there are tons of documents that we have which are in binders. Binders are great if they are on the shelf or if their contents are being accessed on a regular basis but when you are moving and space is a key factor, they sure become a pain.
We decided to use Chicago screws to save some space. They are flat and allow you to get rid of the extra space that is taken up by partially empty binders, covers, etc. We figure that we have reduced the amount of space that our documents use by about 60%.
Sorry that this isn’t really a techie post but this was such a cool idea, I needed to share it.

January 12th, 2008 at 10:38 pmAre you kidding? The small stuff is important too. I have a bunch of paperwork from classes that I took years ago. I’m poor, so I used the same binder for every class. I was using paperclips and hemp cord to help archive this material. This is a much neater method. Thank you.

January 14th, 2008 at 8:05 amTo keep it techie, you could always scan the papers and then use OCR to transform them to word documents. I have done this for 1000’s of pages of old AS400 documents, it the great thing is, it is searchable!!

Scanning is an excellent idea, should the content warrant it and if you have sufficient time to do it.

January 16th, 2008 at 8:34 amMeeting notes at my office have been kept for decades in file folders with a folder pin (flat head with two ‘points’ that go through the file folder, then through a single hole, and get bent outwards to hold the paper. Much cheaper and quicker to use.
If you work in an older office like I, you might still find those single-hold desk punches that I think were made for this.

January 17th, 2008 at 9:58 amHow does this work for making the document readable though? Obviously a binder uses more space, but the pages turn easily. I would think that using these screws would make the document impossible to lie flat and hard to read? Am I wrong?
