DCoT Needs Your Help
Things are starting to get busy around Daily Cup of Tech! The blog is growing at a fantastic rate and we are seeing new visitors everyday. We are also seeing a lot of very dedicated repeat readers both on the blog and in the RSS feed (over 4000 daily!).
With all of the e-mails, comments, requests, article writing, and tech projects that I am working on, it is starting to get difficult to maintain the blog. So, I am at a crossroads. I need to give up something so that I do not find myself working until 4 AM each morning!
The big question is: “What do I give up?” and I am looking to you to help me make my decision.
What I need to determine is whether I can generate enough money from Daily Cup of Tech to warrant quitting my one day a week job and spend that whole day working on the blog.
What I’m Going To Do
For the entire month of August, I am going to very closely track the revenue that I am receiving from Daily Cup of Tech. If the amount of revenue in August surpasses that of my one day a week job, I will quit that job and give that day to you, the Daily Cup of Tech reader!
The flip side to this decision is that if I can’t generate enough to warrant quitting my one day a week job, I will have to scale back Daily Cup of Tech and only update it once a week.
Where Does The Revenue Come From?
Daily Cup of Tech can generate revenue in several different ways:
- Donations
- Google ads on website
- Feedburner ads on website and in RSS feeds
- Text link ads on website
- Sponsored posts
I am also open to other suggestions for ways to generate income from Daily Cup of Tech as long as they are in line with the website and its true purpose of getting solid tech information to the readers.
How You Can Help
There are a number of ways that you can help make this a reality.
Donate
This is probably the quickest and easiest way that you can have an impact. Simply use the Tip Jar at the top of this post to make a donation through PayPal.
Remember that all people/companies who make a donation will receive recognition each week and, if you send me an e-mail with a link to your website after you donate, I will gladly link to your website.
If you have a product that you would like to donate as a prize for contests on Daily Cup of Tech, these are greatly appreciated as well. I would even be willing to do a little post about your product!
Advertise/Sponsor
If you have a product or website that you would like to promote on Daily Cup of Tech, feel free to e-mail me and I’m sure that we could come to an arrangement. A great example of this is AlwaysWebHosting who is providing me excellent hosting service in exchange for some text links, a link in my e-mail signature, and a mention in my thank you posts.
You can also advertise through Text-Link-Ads or ReviewMe, although only half of the money that you spend on them will actually go to Daily Cup of Tech. You would probably be better off contacting me directly and I would probably give you a better deal (for both of us).
I am also willing to let people sponsor individual posts or even the front page of Daily Cup of Tech. It costs about US$10 per thousand impressions based on the number of pageviews of the previous month in Google Analytics. I am working on automating this process but until then, simply pick a post or page and send me an e-mail.
Use The Advertisements
I only get paid for advertising if you support my sponsors and advertisers so make sure you give them some love as well. Check out their websites and the products that they have to offer.
Tell Others About Us
The more traffic that is coming to Daily Cup of Tech, the more we can generate from advertisements. Some ways that you can help get traffic to us is:
- Link to Daily Cup of Tech from your website or blog
- Comment about Daily Cup of Tech in other blogs
- E-mail your friends either directly or using the E-mail This Post link
- Write about us in your blog
- Submit DCoT posts to Digg, del.icio.us, StumbleUp, etc.
- Recommend posts to other blogs and websites
Become a Regular
If you are new or just an occasional DCoT reader, I would encourage you to come by more frequently to help boost the traffic. I would also encourage you to subscribe to one of the RSS feeds to help keep you in the loop.
It’s Up To You
I have to admit that this move is making me pretty nervous because I am leaving the fate of my beloved blog in the hands of complete strangers. I really do not know how this will turn out. I am going to add a Become My Boss section in the sidebar so that you can track how things are going.
If you found this post useful, why don't you buy me a cup of coffee to show your gratitude?

August 6th, 2007 at 10:55 amHere’s an idea. Have you ever thought about offering the option for people to do a monthly support payment of like $2? So if someone wants to help you out they can give a 1 time thing, or sign up to be automatically billed each month. I know there would be people out there who’d like to support you in this way. But they wouldn’t think (or remember) to do it on their own. i think Paypal offers these types of options.

That is an awesome idea! I would like to think that some people would be willing to donate $2 each month if they did not have to think about it!I’ll do some research and see what I come up with.
