Not a super secure way of doing it but it sure will get past the majority of people!

RSSFor those of you who have been following the whole tumblog story, I have created two new feeds to accommodate some of the requests. Now, you have a choice in which feed your subscribe to.

  • Full Feed. This feed will give you everything that is posted on DCoT. Regular posts and tumblog posts included.
  • Feed without Tumblog. You asked for a feed without the tumblog content. Well, you got it!
  • Tumblog Feed. For those of you who likes the old tumblog feed but are not very excited about my other posts, this feed is for you.

Now, with any luck, this will provide everyone with a feed that suits their needs. If not, feel free to drop me a line and I’m sure that we can work something out.

TablesAs some of you may have noticed, there was a bit of a problem with the blogroll yesterday and today. It seems that when I was messing around with the database this weekend, I must have deleted a couple of tables! (Yes, I know! Dumb! Dumb! Dumb!)

Once I realized what was going on, I submitted a request to AlwaysWebHosting to recover the two MIA tables. Once that was done, rather than just waiting, I went exploring.

I decided to dig through some of the non-web folders that were in my account on AlwaysWebHosting. Sure enough, I found a folder called sqlbackups. Hmmm…could this be of any help?

Help it was! In the folder I found a SQL file for each of my databases. It was really easy to open up the appropriate file, find the missing tables structure and content, and create a recovery file. I simply imported this file back into the database and everything was good to go!  I closed the tech support ticket and here we are!

So, what can we learn from how AlwaysWebHosting does business?

  1. Perform your backups religiously.  This will eventually save your bacon!
  2. Empower your clients/users.  AlwaysWebHosting solved my self-created problem without lifting a finger.  Basically , it’s the old give a man a fish vs. teach a man to fish scenario.
  3. Plan ahead.  Had AlwaysWebHosting not planned properly by putting all of these services in place in advance, things could have turned out a lot worse! Nothing takes the place of proper pre-planning!

So, thanks, AlwaysWebHosting for continuing to provide such excellent hosting and support.  If you need hosting for your blog or website, you owe it to yourself to check out AlwaysWebHosting.

Thanks to some MySQL voodoo, everyone should have the ability to both comment and ping any of the posts from the tumblog.
