Help Requests
I know for a fact that there are a lot of different tech support problems you are dealing with on a daily basis. And it can be really tough to figure some of these things out. So, I would like to offer my services, so to speak.
This is your opportunity to submit your tech support questions to me so that I know what you would like me to post about. You can simply put your tech support questions in the comments or you can fire me an e-mail at techsupport@dailycupoftech.com.
Now, just a few comments about this new “service” that I will be providing:
- Since I am doing this as a free service, do not expect any serious turnaround times. I will get to your requests as I get to them.
- The wider the audience that can benefit from answering this tech support question, the greater the chance that it will be answered and the sooner it will be answered.
- All answered will be posted on DCoT. If you want answers to questions but want to keep the answers to yourself, then contact me at my regular e-mail address and we can talk about payment schedules and timelines.
- I have a lot of experience in various technology areas but no one can know everything. I know for a fact that I will be stumped from time to time and it may be in an area that I have no interest. There is a very good chance that I will not be answering these questions.
- “Building block” questions will usually be answered more quickly (and easily) than all encompassing questions. For example, “How do I add a new user to Vista?” will be answered more quickly than “How do I build a non-heterogeneous network that spans 45 cities over 27 states?”
Beyond these basic parameters, the sky is the limit. I really look forward to some of the questions that you, the readers, come up with!
If you found this post useful, why don't you buy me a cup of coffee to show your gratitude?

March 22nd, 2007 at 9:14 amHey, you stole my idea, I was going to do the same thing at my site! J/K.
After reading some of the many articles you have here, I have no doubt you will have many questions about various subjects. I think it is a very good thing you are doing, there are many people who could benefit from the knowledge of a PC veteran.

March 22nd, 2007 at 11:00 amI do tech support for a living and I think you guys might be biting off more that you can chew but good luck to you. If people had enough brains to use Google they could answer their own questions. That is where I get the answers I don’t already know.
For example, just recently one of my users had a problem booting their laptop with their USB printer plugged in and turned on. After doing a little Googling I found that all I had to do was disable USB Legacy Support. Even an experienced geek learns something new everyday.

March 22nd, 2007 at 11:18 amI know that this can be a lot of work but running a blog is also a lot of work and I figured that if I am going to be writing posts, it should be about things that people need help with. So, that is why were are here today.

March 22nd, 2007 at 2:37 pmYes, a lot of answers can be found if you know what to search for. A lot of people who can’t solve the computer issues they have though, don’t know where to start. Over my 15 years in the business as a network/system admin, I’ve run across many problems that have exhibited symptoms that had nothing to do with the root cause. I think giving people an idea of what to do next based on the knowledge of a experienced tech is just what a lot of people need.

March 23rd, 2007 at 11:51 amI have a question that might benefit others.
I am a 20 year Windows user, but have just started using Ubuntu. I installed it just fine and also installed applications under the Add / Remove program, no sweat.
Any time I want to install anything outside this, I am hopelessly lost.
My current fantasy is to install Synergy. I have two computers and two monitors side by side. Synergy is a software KM switch and it would be so fantasicly cool to be able to move my mouse to the side of the screen to switch over to the other computer.
I was able to install the Windows server, no problem. (you double click the install.exe file an answer “yes” to some questions.)
But I tried a dozen times to install the linux client, to no avail. I asked help in the forum, and got a great answer I could do nothing with. (paste xyz into the pref file as root - huh?)
There is a great, wide wonderful world out there outside the Ubuntu Add / Remover program, I suspect.
Could you tell me, like you’re talking to a six year old, how to install Synergy? (and by extension, lots of cool stuff)
You are my hero forever!
