USB WordpressWordpress is the blogging system of choice for Daily Cup of Tech. I have been using it from day one. I find that is is very functional and flexible. It lets me be creative and yet works right out of the box. And I do not need any fancy tool set that I need to carry around with me all the time because everything is available to me online whenever I need it.

Well, not whenever I need it. I am definitely at the mercy of both my Internet provider and my web host. If either of them are not working properly for some reason, then I really can’t blog.

Enter the good old USB drive. Ralph.FM has a nice tutorial on how to install Wordpress onto a USB drive. This way, you can work on your blog from anywhere, even if you don’t have Internet access.

There are a couple of issues with this solution that still need to be addressed:

  1. Replicating the data between your USB drive and your public Wordpress installation. You will need to figure out how to get files and database entries synchronized. This may seem like a small thing but in reality, it’s not!
  2. Systems that are already running a web server and a mySQL database are going to have difficulty launching these services.

But, even with these shortcomings, this is really a cool idea. Good work, Ralph!
