Allow Hard Disks to Spin Down
In Reduce Home Network Power Consumption, one of the tips that I recommended was letting the hard drives spin down so that they consume less power. Well, here is how you can do just that!
Simply perform these steps:
- Open up your Control Panel
- Click on Performance and Maintenance
- Click on Power Options
- Under the Settings for… section in the middle of the Power Options Properties window, you will find Turn off hard disks
- Set the Turn off hard disks setting to the time that you desire
- Close all windows.
That’s it. Now, the hard drives will turn off after a period of being idle. When you need the hard drives, they will automatically spin up again.
If you found this post useful, why don't you buy me a cup of coffee to show your gratitude?

Which is better: allow the hard drive and monitor to turn off or hibernate. I’m curious because if one has an intelligent cpu fan and the cpu is idle along with hard drive and monitor is that just as good as hibernate? -

I always do this, but I wanted to go a step further.
How do I make USB-connected HD’s to spin-down?
A friend told me that three or four years ago he came across such an application, but has been unable to find it again.
