Windows Home Server: No VMWare Allowed
Well, I was lucky enough to get on he Windows Home Server beta list and I have downloaded the entire contents of the system (1.71 GB) to my hard drive. I decided to set it up as a virtual machine in VMware so that I can more easily document the progress.
Here are the screen shots that I got:
Not exactly a screaming success to begin with!
Here is Microsoft’s official stance:
Windows Home Server setup is not supported in virtualization.
With that being said, I have been hearing rumors that it will work under Virtual PC 2007:
I installed it using VPC2007 and had no issues, all went through perfectly.
So, with that said, it looks like I will be downloading Virtual PC and getting it running on this system. I’ll keep you posted as to my progress.
If you found this post useful, why don't you buy me a cup of coffee to show your gratitude?

March 1st, 2007 at 6:10 pmI found the above site which says to place your DVD as the first boot device. You might try that.
Also, people have gotten it working in VMware Wkst 6 beta,if you’re willing to try it. -

March 14th, 2007 at 9:58 amI tried to load it last night using VPC2007 like you said above and it fussed at me saying the hard drive needed to be SCSI or SATA. I don’t see anywhere in VPC to make that distinction for the virtual hard drives. Since you guys got it to work I wonder if you have any tips.

April 6th, 2007 at 12:18 pmI’m sorry but i’m afraid of you can install windows home server under VMWare (Workstation 6.0 beta) with 512MB of RAM and 35GB of HDD, in the same way of Windows Server 2003. I’ve got Windows Vista Ultimate too (512 MB RAM and 20GB HDD).

July 28th, 2008 at 7:43 pmHi:
It works with a 70 GB “growing” virtual IDE disk in 2 GB split files. The split files are on my Synology NAS.
It did not like virtual SCSI and insists that there must be at least 65 GB allocated.
