Create an Instant Online Calculator & Win a Gift Certificate
There are a ton of websites out there that have different calculators to help you with your day to day life. I have often thought that it would be cool to know exactly how they work and to be able to create my own calculators. Unfortunately, a busy life has kept me from gaining these skills. That is, until I discovered Instacalc!
Instacalc lets you create live web based calculators that you can save on the Instacalc website or embed into your own website. For example, I created the DCoT Online Time Waster Calculator. If you go to the version that is at Instacalc, you can not only see the calculator but also the live pie chart that comes with it!
Below, is the embedded version (minus the chart):
Here is my challenge to you and your opportunity to win a $25 Amazon.com gift certificate:
- Go to Instacalc
- Create your cool calculator
- Post a link to it in the comments before midnight (central standard time) February 28, 2007
I will then create a page with all of the calculators embedded in it. You and your friends will get a chance to vote for it March 4 11 to 10 17, 2007 with the winner being announced March 11 18, 2007.
So, start your calculators!
Update
As you may have seen above, I am changing the voting dates (things are a bit nutty). I will get to it next week.
If you found this post useful, why don't you buy me a cup of coffee to show your gratitude?

February 17th, 2007 at 7:01 amThis is great! I am going to create a tool for doing taxes which can be edited as I go along. It’s grrrreat not to have to enter the numbers again and again when I think I have made a mistake.

February 26th, 2007 at 9:45 pmHere is my calculator. Normally when taking classes that have many assessment methods such as midterms and h/w with different weights on them, its a bother to calculate your total score. This calculator lets you enter the weights of each assessment method, and enter your relative marks in them, and you can calculate your final grade.

February 27th, 2007 at 9:15 pmLook at the hypothesis of the Sun going around the stationary Earth.
In 2001,25% of Americans believed (2001 NSF Survey) that the Sun went around the Earth.
During Galileo’s time around 1610, the majority of the population of Europe thought that the Sun was going around the stationary Earth.
At this rate, it will be the year 2126 when only 1% of Americans believe that the Sun goes around the stationary Earth.

February 28th, 2007 at 9:09 pmThis setup calculates the amount one pays per year (or if desired, for multiple years) on gas. The amount paid is dependent on the gas price per gallon, vehicle gas mileage, distance traveled per day, and the number of days traveled per year - all which can be adjusted. Also calculated is the average price per week and per month. This may be useful when looking for new cars - e.g. comparing different gas mileages.
