Create Documents in PDF for free.
In the past, there have been times when I wished that I could create or recreate a document in PDF format. Sometimes I wanted to send a document in a format that Mac and Linux users could read and sometimes I wanted to simply protect the data so that it could not be changed or altered. In the past, PDF creation tools were either expensive or hard to find (or both).
This is no longer the case. CutePDF allows you to create a PDF document from any application capable of printing. CutePDF installs as a printer just like your deskjet or laser printer. When you’re ready to convert your document or information into PDF format, print your selection, select the CutePDF printer and select a save location. The file will automagically appear in your chosen location. It can be downloaded from http://www.cutepdf.com. The pro version costs money ($49.95) and includes additional functionality but the basic version is free and provides the basic conversion capability.

February 13th, 2007 at 8:37 amPDF Creator can do the same, is free open source and very functional, the pdf creation interface is a little clunky but it does do the job quite well. It might not be as robust but it is being actively developed, and is un-encumbered for businesses.

February 13th, 2007 at 9:14 amI have heard about PDF Creator… what I like the most about CutePDF is since it’s a “printer”, you can share it across your network so that anyone that can see it can create a PDF without anything else installed.

February 13th, 2007 at 8:41 pmAnother vote for pdf creator, it is by far the best (and I’ve trialled cutepdf as well).
PDF creator installs as a printer as well (I believe it’s possible to set it up as s network printer too).

February 14th, 2007 at 4:06 amAnother PDF Creator vote over here too. It’s a free, open-source, PDF printer driver that -as step mentions- can also be shared on the network according to installation.
Admittedly I’ve not tried it but it is offered during installation.Open-office “Export to PDF” is good, but a printer driver is so much more useful for every program you use.
In Openoffice I’m actually more impressed (& sorry about the upcoming pun) with the “Export to SWF” feature in Impress (OOo’s Powerpoint equivalent). So you can effectively open a Powerpoint presentation and save it as a Shockwave Flash object. -

February 15th, 2007 at 5:10 pmI’ve been using pdf995 for a few years. It installs as a printer on your machine. To create a PDF you just “print” your document to it. The free version has a nag popup to their website but it works very well.
