ZThis was passed on to me from a newly acquired friend in the blog world. I started checking the sites listed and it works!

What’s the idea? It started with Mack Collier of The Viral Garden, who came up with the idea of giving a links boost to us smaller bloggers, the ‘Z List’. As you may know, a blog’s success in terms of visibility really depends on links: more links = higher Technorati & Google Pagerank results = more people finding you.

Instructions

The premise is simple: Write a post, and copy and paste my list from below into it. Make sure the links are active and correct. If your blog is on that list, remove it because your post isn’t about self-promotion. Don’t worry, because if your name is on mine, it’s on others and will spread. Add your favorite deserving blogs to the top of the list (not compulsory). Publish the post. People will notice the incoming links, and hopefully write their own z-list posts. The result will be that we all get more links pointing to our blogs, and more readers — it’s got to be good!

Key Points

  1. Create a new post on your blog.
  2. Copy and Paste the entire list of blog links below
  3. Add any blogs that you want to include near the top of the list. (Optional)
  4. Include the blog where you first got the list from, on the list in your post.
  5. Do not include your own blog links on the list in your post.
  6. Make sure that all links are copied intact (use the source, Luke).
  7. Publish the Post.

Time for an update on the T-List and the L-List: First some history: On March 2, 2007 the T-List was launched by Quebec (CAN) based Mathieu Ouellet of Radaron who modeled it after the Z List, originally launched by Mack Collier of Viral garden. Mathieu now states in a response to Leeds (UK) based Darren Cronian’s provocative and funny The Death of The T-List: I’ve created the T-List for fun and also to see the impact it could have in

ET-List stands for Education/Teacher list. This concept have been used in the past with the Z-List. This time, it’s up to education and teacher bloggers to be promoted and even discovered. ; )

  3. Student Blogs :: The Student Blog Aggregator Says:

it helps everyone on the list get a few more links for their site and thereby improve the visibility and hence traffic of their blog. The idea is a simple one and was pinched from the idea of the T-List which lists travel blogs itself copied from the Z List, originally launched by Mack Collier of Viral garden. I shamelessly pinched the original of this from Ministry of Propaganda. What you do is: Write a post titled “The Expat List” Copy the links below into it

Thanks for spreading the Z List!

  18. runpcrun Says:

Disclaimer: I am not an SEO expert.

After saying “Thank you for the addition Tim” I have to say it’s probably in the reciprocal linking genre as far as Google is concerned.
Back in the early days of blogs, blogs started rising massively up PageRank and search results because of this, a lot of early bloggers linked in large numbers to each other. After a while Google tweaked their algorithm and the blogs about puppies dropped back to where they should be.
Which means that it will either be discounted by their current algorithm or if it is successful then they’ll tweak the algorithm to make to stop working.
It’s a trick, not much better than a link farm, and it will most likely appear to Google as an artificial network because it’s so heavily meshed.

It’s probably not a good idea in the long run…

  19. will Says:

I’d be careful with this. Anything people do to try and manipulate the system can raise the eyebrows of Google, and before you know it you could be sandboxed and taken out of their search results altogether. If Google sees this interwoven web of sites that have nothing in common with each other (keyword-wise, anyway), it might end up doing more harm than good.

Additionally, you never know who you are going to be associating yourself with in a reciprocal link exchange such as this. Unless you visit all the sites on this list, it’s a risk. Even then, of one of the sites next to yours gets blacklisted by Google, you might see some negative results for yourself since you were associated with it.

  20. Tim Fehlman Says:

    runpcrun and will,

In the end, you are probably right. There will only be a small effect. The only thing that I think that could make this effective is the fact that it is the Z-List and such a small thing (relative to the big boys) that it may fly under the radar or be seen as not worth the effort to tackle.

  21. Gavin Heaton Says:

Really … I wouldn’t worry about it. I arrived here thanks to the Z-list and will take a look around. I am sure you will get many new visitors, but they will only return if the content works for them. Me …? I am still looking around.

But as to blog success … depends what you want and how you prioritise it. Traffic is nice, but comments make you feel loved.

Thanks for joining in the Z-list.

  22. Matthew Jabs Says:

While I can definitely understand the line-of-thinking behind the previous comments…I’m going to have to disagree with the fact that this list is harmful.

What will this network of people do that Digg, Fark, etc. don’t already do. The purpose is to get smaller blogs more traffic. There is nothing fishy about that. Google would only, seemingly, have a problem with it if it was perpetrating questionable Adsense practices.

The thought process behind The Z List being harmful is a little Big Brotherish to me.

    Anyway…penny for your thoughts…

  24. Becky Carroll Says:

The Z-list has certainly taken on a different dimension now (most of the blogs were about marketing early on), but it is still a good way to introduce others to new blogs. It has expanded my exposure, both of my blog as well as to other worthy bloggers. Thanks for keeping it going.
