Protect Your Privacy With A LiveCD
If you have spent any time on the Internet, I’m sure that you have seen an advertisement for “security” software that is guaranteed to get rid of all the personal information that is collected on your computer whenever you visit a website. Often this software is used to hide the fact you are going somewhere you shouldn’t but there are some legitimate reasons to employ a strategy like this.
Often, with this “security” software, you will find that it is unable to delete everything because of the constantly changing face of computer software or, if it does delete the content, it is still recoverable with a forensic tool such as Restoration. My question is, “Why save the information in the first place?” If this is what is causing problems, then if you don’t save any information, then there is nothing to trace back.
This is when I started to think about a LiveCD as a solution. Since everything is run from memory or the CD-ROM drive, there is no data being saved. With no data being saved, there is no “file trail” to follow. No files, no problem!
There are a ton of LiveCD solutions out there. At this point, there are over 300 LiveCDs listed on the LiveCD List. If you dig through there, you are sure to find something that will suit your needs. But, if you are a bit more paranoid than the average person (you can add me to that list), then I might suggest the Anonym.OS LiveCD.
From the Anonym.OS LiveCD website:
Anonym.OS is an OpenBSD 3.8 Live CD with strong tools for anonymizing and encrypting connections. Standard network applications are provided and configured to take advantage of the tor onion routing network.
In a nutshell, not only does this LiveCD not store any information on your computer, it also makes it more difficult (but not impossible) for someone on the Internet to know exactly where you are coming from, who you are, and what you are running for a computer system.
