DIY Remote Tech Support
I received a great e-mail last week from Dan White over at RunPCRun. I had originally intended to write about this when he sent me the original e-mail but, unfortunately, life happened. (Sorry, Dan!) So, in the “better late than never” category, I submit a really cool solution for helping people out remotely.
Earlier this week, I had the distinct displeasure of trying to walk someone through setting up a LogMeIn account so that I could remotely control their computer and fix their problem. I knew I was in trouble when I asked them to enter the address into the address bar and the response was “I want to go to their website, not mail them a letter!” (I’m not kidding!)
This is when the true genius of Dan’s article Create your own VNC support package in 640Kb. Simply e-mail then the link to download your package, install it, and double click on “Get Help!” So simple, even the most dedicated Luddite could figure it out!
Now, this is not a “download and run” solution for the person who is on the tech side but once you go through the steps (which are very well described and laid out in the article), you will have a fully working (and reusable) solution for dealing with those remote support calls!
Good work, Dan!
If you found this post useful, why don't you buy me a cup of coffee to show your gratitude?

However this is intended to fulfill a different need, it’s not dependent on MSN and UPnP routers for it’s connection, and is simple for enough for even my father to double-click on rather than going through the remote assistance wizard.
