Backup Windows to FreeNAS with Rsync
I hate backups! They are unreliable, time consuming, easy to forget, and often don’t work when you really need them to! Because of these, and other reasons, people often forget or neglect to backup their systems.
Unfortunately, this is one of those nasty things that you just to do. Just like visiting the dentist, you can get away without doing it for years but, in the end, it will catch up to you.
The best solution for this pain that I have come up with is to use rsync to duplicate my Windows workstation files to a FreeNAS server. I have written a complete step by step guide on how to do exactly this.
If you have not been following the FreeNAS articles that I have been writing, this might be a good time to read through them so that you are up to speed on them.
Good luck with your backups!
If you found this post useful, why don't you buy me a cup of coffee to show your gratitude?

August 6th, 2007 at 6:17 amThis is really a must for any computer user with more than One PC in their house, also since FreeNAS 0.685b2 which is the most recent build and appears to be stable. You are now able to implement a Soft RAID 5. That also gives a further level of protection. As drives are now much cheaper it is a false economy to use old drives - remember you are trying to protect your valuable data not put at risk. Heat is probally the biggest enemy of disk drives these days - apart from dropping them, I do understand that they are able to withstand impacts of up to 8000G (Eight Thousand times its own weight) - But I just wouldn’t risk it.
