WhatPC is reporting on a research study that states open source databases are ‘60 % cheaper’ than other solutions. The research study was conducted by Forrester Research.

There has been a lot of talk about whether or not open source (read “free”) software actually is less expensive in the long run compared to commercial (read “pay for”) products. This gets into the whole TCO and ROI calculations.

I have a tendency to lean toward the open source side of things which many technical people. I feel that if I am given the opportunity to figure out how something works, I can make it useful. What is usually used as a counter argument (generally by managers) is that if we can pay someone to make sure that it works and have you doing something that we can’t pay someone else, I want you to work on the latter.

What do you think about the open source vs. commercial issue? Let us know in the comments.
