Wireshark is a packet sniffer. It is an excellent tool when you need to determine what is exactly happening on your network.
A packet sniffer allows you to see the network as your network card sees it. You can look at each piece of data (or packet) and determine exactly what is happening on your network.
It may be a bit confusing at first but once you get used to how it works, a packet sniffer can be one of the most powerful tool in your IT toolbox.
