No Free Upgrade To Vista Ultimate
Most of us have been following the recent “free upgrade” promotion stories that have been floating around the internet. For those of you who have not heard about this, here is the Reader’s Digest version:
Microsoft has agreed to provide purchasers of new Vista capable systems with a coupon that will allow them to upgrade to a version of Vista for free or a reduced price. There are time restrictions on the purchase and restrictions on which version of the Vista you would like to upgrade to.
The latest news indicates that if you want to upgrade your new Vista ready system from Windows XP to Windows Vista Ultimate, you will have to pay the full price for the operating system. No coupon. No free upgrade. No reduced price.
This has settled it for me. I was getting ready to purchase a new system within the next few months but I am now going to wait until it comes out in January (fingers crossed, knock on wood, rub the lucky rabbit’s foot, etc.).

October 31st, 2006 at 8:28 amI am not surprised there is no free upgrade to Vista Ultimate. I am surprised they are not at least offering a reduced price to upgrade. If I were going with Vista, I would do like you and just wait to buy a new system when Vista comes out.
However, I am done with Windows. My next purchase is either going to be a Mac Mini or I am going to buy a bare bones system to build and install some flavor of Linux. Or perhaps both.
I may be forced to deal with Vista at work. I hope I am retired by the time we upgrade from XP. I have used Vista Beta 2 & RC 1 and must say I do not see a compelling reason to upgrade from XP.

1. I spoke to MS sales and asked about purchasing the upgrade from my free upgrade to vista business 64 to the ultimate and was told that wasn’t an option.
2. I asked what the two options were on their website for me to upgrade to. One had an extra “N” on it. The sales rep didn’t know what that version was and offered no advice on how to determine what it was. I was left with choosing my own path on this decision. Needless to say when I was asked if MS Sales answered all my questions, I had to say no, and that this only further shows that MS has too many versions of Vista if their own sales staff doesn’t know what the versions are.
3. I have heard from 3 people who are switching out all MS products in their house to Linux only in the past month. One is a UNIX Admin, one is a Windows Admin (hah!) and one is a non-technical IT manager.
Go figure, this Vista experience may be just what people need to finally open their eyes to MS greed and confusion.
Also, rather then trying to buy the latest hardware to support Vista, and old 5 year old laptop will run amazingly well with Linux!

With Anytime Upgrade whatever the cost of the Vista Version running on your computer, will be deducted from the cost of the Upgrade, and you can choose to upgrade anytime
