11 Password Tips

Trackback or

It seems like we rely on passwords for everything these days. Here are eleven great tips for your passwords:

  1. Treat passwords like your underwear; change them often and don’t leave them lying around!
  2. Never share your passwords with your friends or other people online.
  3. A good password will not be in any dictionary in any language.
  4. Do not use significant dates or names for passwords.
  5. If you are supplied with a default password, change it immediately.
  6. Don’t use the same password for everything. Use a different password every time.
  7. Use a software password safe with a very long access password (20+ characters) to store passwords.
  8. The longer a password the better.
  9. Passwords should contain upper & lowercase, letters and symbols.
  10. Use password generators.
  11. Never write down a password.

Hi. For rule 2 you can compare a password with a toothbrush: never share it with anybody (i guess there are people sharing toothbrushes by the way ;-)).

And although this list is nice, it is also a hard thing to do in practice (is this list basically impractical?), that’s why i guess most people don’t do it like in this list.

It is a tricky and impractical thing to follow for most people.
However I’m gradually converting myself to the thinking behind this list with KeePass (Win32), KeePassX (Linux) and KeePass for Smart Devices(PocketPC/Phone) and it also runs portably on USB devices by using the .zip package
This way I can run the same database from my key on any PC (and any OS I use) and also keep a copy on my PocketPC if I can’t plug the USB key into the PC I am using.
By using this package make rules 3,4,6,7,8,9,10,11 relatively easy. Other than that 2 is easy, 5 is common sense, but 1 - to change passwords regularly is a pain and a lot of work and while I’m doing the others I’m simply not going to do it :)

    Hi

The above rule seems appropriate but what if an individual has 10 of email accounts. I guess then the passwords need to be same for almost 2 - 3 accounts. As the password saving software are concerned, the situations could be that he might face some problem
with the computer system and is not able to acces the software. Then what, in this situation if the user has simlar passwords for 2-3 accounts, could prove helpful.
